Lip Balms on the A-List
Hollywood celebrities know that their eyes may capture the most attention but realize that their lips are also under the public’s microscope. Moist, luscious lips underscore youthful sex appeal, and any deviation from that standard may evoke less than constructive criticism. As such, actors, actresses, athletes, and other well-known folks in the public eye are very lips-conscious and will not hesitate to drop a small fortune finding the right lip product, including expensive lip balms.
and typing the names of the desired products listed below:
However, many celebrities have found their holy grail lip products for what we mere plebeians can even afford. The scope of our focus, the celebrity-preferred lip balms, should not take too much of a bite out of your budget and yet leave your lips in pristine condition.
Now you may wish to wait to try lip balms until your mouth is free of any infection, such as angular cheilitis. Still, those with perleche, have found relief from balms such as Carmex and Blistex, but these products will not cure this infection. They may just relieve irritation and discomfort.
There is a market for lip balms that can help heal conditions such as angular cheilitis, and perhaps a celebrity will be at the forefront of rolling out such a product. To date, there are not many effective lip balms that possess antibacterial and antifungal properties but these are worth a try:
Chamuel Miracle Tea Tree Oil Balm – This product has received bountiful praise on the Internet, particularly on Amazon. The primary ingredient, tea tree oil, has antimicrobial properties – perfect for squashing perleche. Common feedback is that is has a pleasant scent, provides a smooth application experience, and quickly relieves itching and irritation.
Derma e Skinbiotic Treatment Creme – While this is not a lip balm per se, I’m including it in the anti-perleche list because this is an all-purpose formulation, also containing tea tree oil so it has antiseptic qualities with the ability to fight microorganisms. It should help combat and prevent infection while keeping the area moist.
Grandma Minnie’s The Big Brave Boo-Boo Balm – This is formulated with coconut-derived monolaurin, a substance that may pack as much anti-microbial might as isopropyl alcohol and other topical products designed to kill microorganisms. But unlike alcohol, Grandma Minnie’s formulation soothes and softens the lips, providing hydration and moisture.
Now I’m sure the above 3 products have their share of celebrity admirers – especially those who are battling angular cheilitis. But the next 7 lip balms have been touted on record by some of the prominent movers and shakers in Hollywood. (They’re not listed in any order of preference.)
Aquaphor Lip Repair – A favorite of LeAnn Rimes, this lip balm helps heal dry, chapped lips with the moisturizing power of shea butter, chamomile essence, and a healthy mix of vitamins. As an added plus, it should not leave any white film on your mouth. Some folks have noted that the opening may be a little too big and the consistency too thick, but application should not be too difficult and well worth it if it can produce the same benefits to your skin and lips as they have for Ms. Rimes. (A tube of Aquaphor can alternatively be used.)
Clarins HydraQuench Moisture Replenishing Lip Balm – This is a ‘can’t miss’ lip balm with Lupita Nyong as its ambassador and newly-recruited fan, Ellis DeGeneris. Lupita introduced it to Ellen during the Oscars, and the rest, they say, is history. So much buzz followed on social networks that the lip balm was instantly sold out! Word out is that it restores lip moisture levels and lasts for hours as a result of its primary ingredients, shea butter and essential rose wax.
Avon Moisture Therapy Intensive Moisturizing Lip Treatment SPF 15 – A lip balm containing sun screen provides an advantage, especially one that is comfortable to wear and hydrates the lips in any type of weather. At the risk of name-dropping (although isn’t that the point of the article) singer sensation, Fergie, is an Avon Moisture Therapy fan. It provides a bang for the buck and can now indeed be found on Amazon for 99 cents.
Kiehl’s Lip Balm #1 – This formulation is favored by celebrity, Nicole Richie, who extols its lip-saving virtues. The product enjoys a largely favorable reputation among commoners, too, primarily due to the soothing emollients, such as squalene and lanolin. Wheat germ oil and Vitamin E are also included to provide moisture and relieve irritation.
C.O. Bigelow Mentha Lip Blam – Stacy Keibler is addicted to this lip balm and has converted many of her girlfriends to become Bigelow brand users. Here sweet almond oil is combined with shea butter in a fragrance-free formula. The product is also infused with cooling peppermint. Lip hydration and protection is virtually guaranteed.
EOS Lip Balm – How can the Kardashians stay off any list so it’s apropos to include their favorite lip balm, one also favored by Miley Cyrus and Nicole Sherzinger. The acronym, EOS, stands for ‘evolution of smooth’ and this lip balm is designed to smoothly provide moisture to dry, chapped lip. The egg-shaped packaging is unique, as well as the multiple colors and flavors (8 of the in all, including peach, my personal favorite.). The product contains vitamin E, shea butter and jojoba oil, synergistically working together to keep lips soft, and well, smooth.
John Masters Organic Lip Balm – Here, a little goes a long way, as the all-natural balm is formulated with a variety of soothing oils, including jojoba, olive and borage oils. Using too much at one time can make the product feel too greasy so be careful with application. Actress Kristin Bauer touts this balm among her favorites, extolling its moisturizing properties.
Now the aforementioned celebrity lip balms may or may not live up to your expectations. Some celebrities may have simply been paid to endorse products but I would like to think that even paid ambassadors would not ‘advertise’ lip balms that they themselves did not use or like. It’s reassuring, however, that the lip balms listed above all enjoy a rather favorable rating among non-celebrities, and are cheap enough to experiment with, and see the end result.
Again, those with angular cheilitis or other lip conditions, inclined to use lip balms should stick with formulations that are anti-microbial in nature, such as the first 3 listed in this article. But when the condition subsides, you may just join the celebrity bandwagon and choose a product that has received approval from a celebrity.
